Kia Canada recalls the 2014 ForteKia Motors America is recalling nearly 87,000 of its 2014 Forte sedans because of faulty equipment that could cause the cars to catch fire.

A spokesman for Kia Canada says the recall affects approximately 15,905 vehicles in Canada.

The recall notice issued Saturday affects Kia Fortes made from Dec. 5, 2012, through April 17, 2014. The cooling fan resistor might overheat and melt in those vehicles, increasing the risk of a fire.

All owners of the subject vehicles will be notified by  mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer. Owners of vehicles produced from December 5, 2012 to January 27, 2014 will have the cooling fan resistor and multi-fuse unit replaced. Owners of vehicles produced from January 28, 2014 to April 17, 2014 will have only the multi-fuse unit replaced. Owners of vehicles with the 1.8L engine will further have the engine control unit software updated.

Kia will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred pursuant to Kias General Reimbursement Plan filed April 14, 2014.

The recall is expected to begin Feb. 24.

The South Korean automaker has reported several incidents, worldwide, of engine fires that could be linked to the resistor. However, there has been no accidents or injuries, according to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Owners of 2014 Fortes seeking additional information may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542, or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
