ClevelandLincoln Electric has announced the launch of their new VRTEX family of virtual reality arc welding (VRAW) training products.

There are two models available, the VRTEX 360 and the portable VRTEX Mobile, which can be used for on-site training and recruitment events.

The idea behind the new product line is that it will be a form of training that is able to engage new welders in a safe and cost effective manner.

The technology can introduce new welders to the trade in a traditional classroom or in a manufacturing facility. At FABTECH, Sarah Evans, Lincoln’s Virtual Solution Product Manager suggested that it could be used as a screening tool for new applicants or to help train existing workers.

The system uses a specially equipped virtual reality welding helmet, and a torch to recreate realistic welding scenarios for the user. The screen inside the helmet shows an image of the welding gun, and has readings to ensure that the gun is being held at the correct angle.

once a weld is complete, a score is given to the user as well as some analysis about how the weld can be improved. It also replicates a realistic welding puddle along with the sounds and effects to give it a more realistic feel.

The VRTEX Mobile, has a basic GMAW (MIG), although a SMAW stick add-on package available). It is compact and assembles quickly so that it can be moved easily.

The VRTEX 360 gives a 360-degree immersion in environments and applications like SMAW, pipe welding, GMAW (including aluminum and stainless) and multi-position welding.
