CAMBRIDGE—Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. says it will invest $545 million to upgrade its plants in Ontario.

The automaker announced plans in July to expand and upgrade its plants in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ont. plants, which include new machinery and equipment, employee training and various projects to increase efficiency and reduce waste.

The company is expected to invest more than $400 million at the Cambridge plant, which covers about three million square feet between two production facilities that makes the Corolla, Matrix, Camry Solara and Lexus RX line of vehicles.

Construction is expected be complete by the spring of 2013.
Toyota is also upgrading its plant in Woodstock, Ontario, which opened in 2008.

The Woodstock plant is more than 1.8 million square feet and manufactures the RAV4 vehicle.

The Cambridge and Woodstock plants employ about 6,500 people. Upon completion of the $545 million expansion, this number is expected to rise substantially.

The Cambridge plant was the first facility outside of Japan to produce Lexus vehicles.
