MONTREAL: A Russian boilermaker has ordered $20 million worth of valves from Velan Inc. for three 660-megawatt units going into a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Barh, India.

Valen, a Montreal-based industrial valve manufacturer, said its German sales distribution subsidiary, Velan GmbH, booked the order from an un-named Russian company that is building the boilers for NTPC Ltd. (National Thermal Power Corp.), the largest state-owned power-generating company in India.

The order includes high-pressure gate, globe, and check valves and steam traps manufactured by Velan, as well as safety valves with silencers, control valves, butterfly valves, and actuators manufactured by six other companies in Europe.

The plant’s supercritical system instantly converts water into steam without boiling, so it operates at higher pressures and temperatures to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

NTPC recently commissioned its first supercritical power plant at Sipat wher Velan GmbH also supplied valves for a similar integrated supply order with a turbine manufacturer in Russia.

Velan employs more than 1,800 people and has manufacturing plants in 10 countries.
