OAKVILLE, Ont. Siemens Canada says it has been awarded a contract to provide Calgary Transit with 60 new Siemens S200 high-floor light rail vehicles.
The value of the contract was not disclosed.
However, in addition to expanding the citys fleet, the new trains will replac a portion of the current fleet of U2 Siemens vehicles provided to the city in the early 1980s, thereby continuing the strong customer relationship between the company and Calgary Transit.
Since 1981 Calgarys LRT system has become the busiest in North America and second busiest in the world, with an average of more than 300,000 passengers travelling the system daily, according to Siemens.
In a release announcing the contract, Siemens Canada president and CEO Robert Hardt thanked the city for its continued trust in the company.

Weve been a proud supplier to Calgary Transit for more than 30 years and are fortunate to use what we have learned in that time to design these vehicles specifically for the needs of this modern and growing city moving forward, Hardt said.
Siemens Canada employs some 4,500 people at 53 offices and 14 manufacturing and assembly plants across Canada working in industry, energy, health-care and infrastructure-related business.
