INGERSOLL, Ont. The unio representing 2,900 workers at a General Motors plant in Ingersoll, Ont., says it needs more time for negotiations.

The Canadian Auto Workers unio originally wanted to present a tentative agreement to its members at a meeting scheduled for Sunday, but it has cancelled the gathering to give negotiators more time to reach a deal.

Local 88, which represents the workers at Cami Automotive Inc., have been in talks with General Motors for the past several weeks.

Local president Dan Borthwick, who said negotiations are expected to continue next week, added he was confident a deal will be reached before the current contract ends in September.

The CAMI plant produces the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles.

Earlier this month, GM announced it was investing $250 million in new equipment at the plant so it could build a wider variety of vehicles at a lower cost.
