TUBINGEN, Germany Horn Technology Days kicked off June 5th in Tubingen, Germany with a full program of technical presentations and tours of Horn’s state-of-the-art production plant, as well as a rare look at carbide production.

Horn USA technical manager John Kollenbroich kicked off with a seminar on high feed rate machining, focusing on cutting edge geometry and the effect of tool forces on possible feed rates.

“Make sure your control can react quickly enough to take advantage of the capability of the tool”, says Kollenboich who also notes that absolute machine power ratings may be specified for a single spindle RPM, which may be below the ideal cutting RPM. The result can be sub-optimal productivity.

“Be sure you’re at the correct part of the torque curve before running your part”, advised Kollenbroich, who demonstrated a complex dynamic machining test on a multi-axis machine running at peak rates of 11,000 mm/min.

Over the three days of the event, eight seminars will be held in both English and German.
