Cutting tools/turning

Sumitomos new BNC Series consists of four coated PcBN grades featuring three types of edge preparations, each providing a variety of solutions specific to machining hardened steels.

All BNC Series grades have special ceramic based coatings, brazings on all cutting edges, as well as number-etched cutting edges that aid in identifying used corners. Ideal for high speed finishing applications, the new grades have improved resistance to flank wear and crater wear due to newly-developed CBN substrate. A TiCN hybrid coating layer also offers stability of surface roughness.

The CBN substrate with new binder material improves crater wear resistance and edge strength. It achieves great results in general and high precision finishing applications, and can meet a 16Ra surface finish requirement consistently. The BNC Series grade that excels in medium speed machining and carburized surface removal is the BNC200. Its enhanced edge strength and TiAlN based ceramic coating provides reliable cutting edge integrity and consistent tool life.

With its superior chipping resistance and enhanced resistance to overall insert wear, the BNC300 grade is ideal for finishing applications that tackle a combination of both continuous and interrupted surfaces. Other options in the new BNC Series are the wiper edge preparation available for all four grades, and the SV type chipbreaker for carburized layer removal, which is available for the BNC200 coated CBN grade.
